TWGSB are busy this month celebrating Pride in a variety of ways. This week we are enjoying assemblies about Pride Month and at the end of June we will have our annual bake sales to raise money for Porchlight and their The BeYou Project.
Pride is celebrated in the month of June, as that was the month when the Stonewall riots took place. The Stonewall riots were important protests that took place in 1969 in the USA, starting the process of ensuring equal rights for a lot of LGBTQ people in America and around the world.
Pride is a celebration of people coming together in love and friendship, to show how far LGBTQ+ rights have come, and how in some places there's still work to be done.
Lee Marshall, alumnus of TWGSB (Class of 1980), was recently awarded one of the highest honours that the Church of England can bestow on an individual, the Canterbury Cross, for his work in the diversity and inclusion field. He was one of the co-founders of the charity, Stonewall, along with people like Lord Michael Cashman, Lisa Power MBE, and Sir Ian McKellen. He has been regularly recognised in the lists of LGBT senior executives working around the world to make workplaces more inclusive.
Lee kindly recorded an email for our current students about why it's important that we celebrate Pride month. Check out his video here:
