Dear Parents and Carers There is an end-of-term feel in school as both students and staff are 'Christmas-break excited' – probably for different reasons – but nonetheless ready for the end of term to arrive. All students have been working hard and have now sat their first assessments of this academic year. Year 11 have also experienced ‘walking talking mocks’ as preparation for their own mocks and for GCSEs in the summer. These are an opportunity to build confidence and gain valuable practice in exam skills and the application of knowledge. A huge well done to all the Year 11s as they demonstrated maturity and motivation; the feedback to subject teachers and the Key Stage 4 team has been overwhelmingly positive. As a school we have been fortunate enough to host several external speakers over the course of the term. Alongside the students, I had the real privilege of listening to Mr Hadju, a holocaust survivor, who had an exceptionally powerful message for us all. Trip and sporting fixtures have once again been in full flow. The staff do an amazing job in ensuring these activities take place so, once again, a big thank you to those who give up their time to provide our students with these opportunities. The most important day of this term is of course the chocolate tombola – a controlled chocolate frenzy is the best description I can give it. It is certainly a student favourite, and the PTA do a wonderful job in organising and running this event among others. Christmas dinner was also a huge success on both campuses. It is no easy task to cook, plate and serve hundreds of Christmas meals. The students enjoyed it and commented on the lovely food. Thank you to the catering teams for producing such delicious lunch and making the occasion festive by wearing hats and providing Christmas background music. We finish the term with the Christmas concert at the Tunbridge Wells campus. Again, the music department has hosted a concert at both campuses this year. We have a talented group of musicians at TWGSB, and it is great to see the students grow and develop in both skill and enthusiasm. Well done to everyone involved and especially to Mr Joris and Mr Brush for running rehearsals and organising both concerts, as well as including staff in the line-up! On behalf of all the staff and governors, I would like to wish you all a happy and peaceful Christmas. Thank you for your continued support. Yours faithfully Amanda Simpson |
A truly wonderful term! The students have really embraced the school's values and are thriving. Achieving 115,615 positive house points this academic year is an incredible accomplishment. Currently, Arlo (7J) with 243 points, Jackson (8I) 227 and William (7J) with 222 points are the students with the most points at Sevenoaks; and Finley (8C) with 213, Joseph (9F) 203 and George (8C) with 197 points at Tunbridge Wells.
HOUSE POINT BOUNDARIES TALLY 5 (Gold 200 points): 7 students 4 (Silver 150 points): 55 students 3 (Bronze 100 points): 307 students 2 (50 points): 926 students 1 (25 points): 1305 students |
Celebrating all the successes is so important at TWGSB and for maintaining motivation and fostering a positive school environment. Huge congratulations to all the students, and here's to even more achievements in the future! Keep up the fantastic work!
Mr Lewis, Assistant Headteacher
Christmas is meant to be a time of celebration but for some people it can be a challenging time. For young people the website Kooth offers lots of support and is free. There is also a website for adults, provided by the same group, called Qwell.
In addition, there are lots of links to different support groups on our school website: Student Well-being - Tunbridge Wells Grammar School for Boys and links under 'School Resources' in the 'School Information' area of the TWGSB parent app, MyEd.
We hope that you have a wonderful break and enjoy spending time with your families.
Mrs Rose, Assistant Headteacher
Year 12 students recently had the privilege of attending a careers talk by well-known BBC weather broadcaster Sarah Keith-Lucas. During the session, Sarah shared insights into her inspiring career journey, starting from her early aspirations to her current role at the BBC. She explained the fascinating details of her day-to-day responsibilities as a weather presenter and the diverse opportunities her job has provided, including travel and working alongside experts in meteorology. Her passion and dedication left a strong impression on the students, who were captivated by her stories and the behind-the-scenes look at broadcasting.
The talk sparked curiosity and provided valuable advice on pursuing a career in media, science and beyond. Many students left feeling inspired and better informed about the pathways available to them after leaving school.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to Sarah Keith-Lucas for taking the time to share her experiences and advice with our students.
TWGSB welcomed back Tom Treutenaere this week, a former student now studying at Cambridge University, to share his invaluable experiences with Year 12 students.
Tom delivered an engaging and informative talk about the process of applying to Oxford and Cambridge, offering practical advice on how to make an application stand out. He emphasised the importance of super-curricular activities, such as independent research, online courses and academic competitions, and how these can demonstrate passion and commitment beyond the classroom.
Students gained a deeper understanding of what to expect from the rigorous interview process, with Tom sharing tips on how to prepare effectively and approach questions with confidence.
The talk concluded with a lively Q&A session, where students asked a range of insightful questions about university life, the challenges of Oxbridge applications, and how to navigate the competitive admissions process.
We are grateful to Tom for returning to inspire the next generation of TWGSB students, equipping them with the knowledge and motivation to pursue their academic aspirations.
Mr Smith, Assistant Headteacher – KS5
As Sixth Formers we’ve been working very hard to raise as much money as we possibly can for the Head Students' charities before the Christmas break. On Wednesday 18th December we had a six-a-side football tournament in school, where we had several teams competing and plenty of students spectating. Thursday 19th brought our Sixth Form-exclusive Christmas Jumper Day, as well as another successful cake sale for all year groups.
We managed to raise £360 this week. All the funds raised go to Porchlight and Hospice in the Weald; more fundraising events will take place in the spring.
Austin V, Head Student
In 2023/24 we had the highest number to date of TWGSB students sign up to take part in the DofE Awards: 209 students in Year 9 started their Bronze Award, 39 students started their Silver Award, and seven students started their Gold Award. Of these students, 140 have already completed their Bronze Award and 28 students have completed their Silver Award. We expect many more students to have completed their award by this Christmas. We are very proud of the maturity, commitment and resilience shown by all the students who have completed their awards.
To celebrate these achievements we held two DofE Awards Evenings in school in November for students and their parents to present DofE certificates and badges. The evenings were a great success with most of the students who had completed their award in attendance.
We also had a very special certificate to present as this is the first year that we have appointed a student to be a Young Leader. We were delighted to congratulate Oliver J (Year 11) who had completed the Young Leaders programme, and give him a certificate for his hard work supporting the DofE groups in school.
This academic year we introduced a new integrated programme for the Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) award scheme at TWGSB. This will enable students to complete all three DofE awards from Bronze to Gold within Years 9 to 13. We also have a new, dedicated team of staff who are trained as assessors and can support our groups on expeditions.
The positive impact of this is evident – as we start the new season in school, we are delighted to have our biggest cohort yet! We have over 200 students signed up for Bronze, nearly 100 signed up for Silver and over 20 students signed up for Gold; it promises to be a great year for DofE in school. Over the next term, we will be expecting students to commence their different activities and logging this on eDofE.
Mrs Fedrick, DofE Coordinator, and Mr Hamilton, Assistant Headteacher
The student council meet at both campuses once a term to discuss different issues in school so that students have a voice. We always discuss well-being provision in school and new to our regular agenda is 'How can we be a greener school?' Last term we discussed the need for recycling bins in and around the school and requested funds from the PTA to purchase these. The PTA kindly agreed and we have bought 70 recycling bins for classrooms. Students will be able to use these for cardboard, paper and plastic and an eco monitor will be nominated in each form to make sure these are emptied regularly. Looking forward we are now thinking about recycling at lunch time, a poster competition to promotion recycling and plants in every classroom.
A big thank you to the PTA for their donation of nearly £1,000 to purchase the recycling bins. We hope that this is the first step towards a greener school.
Mrs Rose, Assistant Headteacher and School Council Lead
Kent Youth County Council is a group of 60 young people elected to represent and act upon the views, issues and opinions of the young people in Kent. Elections were held across schools in Kent during November and all school pupils were eligible to vote. Some of our students put themselves forward to represent the Tunbridge Wells district.
A huge congratulations to the following TWGSB students who have been elected as Kent Youth County Council Members: Harvey (Year 7), Luca (Year 9) and Magnus (Year 10), plus Aarnav (Year 8) who was elected as a deputy. Well done!
Mrs Rose, Assistant Headteacher
The library’s autumn/spring book club, the Fellowship of the Reads (FOTR), is now in its second year and continues to be popular across both campuses. We developed FOTR with the Senior Librarian from The Skinner’s School and this year Tunbridge Wells Girls' Grammar School (TWGGS) has also joined the fellowship.
This year we are reading 12 books and we meet weekly to swap the books and enjoy some book-related activities. Students were asked at the beginning (contrary to normal instruction) to judge the books by their covers. They were asked to rate them in the order that they would like to read them based on the covers. At the end we will all re-rate the books according to enjoyment, to see how the two ratings compare.
At our Christmas meeting we held our hugely popular bucket game activity in which students draw out a forfeit that they must carry out to win a chocolate Santa. Forfeits can range from 'Roar like a Lion' to more literary tasks such as 'outline the plot of your favourite FOTR book'.
The library would like to wish all TWGSB families a happy Christmas. We look forward to the New Year and hearing from the many students who will come in and tell us about the books they received for Christmas.
Take a look at the Christmas Reading Times 2024 for a list of books and reading linked to broadcast TV over the festive period. This list is compiled each year by a school librarian who is part of the School Librarian Network. We hope that you enjoy it.
Mrs Musselwhite Steel, Library Manager
We are thrilled to share the fantastic news about the PTA's fundraising efforts. Thanks to your incredible support, we’ve raised an impressive amount for our school this term, including:
£800 on the Chocolate Tombolas
£2,450 on Own Clothes Day
And around £2,500 so far on the Christmas Raffle – tickets are still available HERE!
We’d also like to give a special mention to the Art department, which once again organised the ever-popular Christmas calendar. A big thank you to them – and to the students – for their hard work and creativity. Combined with our other efforts, we have been able to give over £20,000 in support to departments including DT, PE, Science, Music, Drama, Maths and many more.
However, funding is only one way in which the PTA helps. We are also delighted to have catered the school's Christmas concerts again this year. It is always a pleasure to provide refreshments for the inspirational performances of the ever so talented students. And, of course, there are the three wonderful Christmas trees across the two sites we have provided and decorated.
Needless to say, your generosity and participation make a real difference in enriching our children's education.
So, if you're interested in getting involved with the PTA, please don't hesitate to reach out to pta@twgsboys.kent.sch.uk. Your time and expertise are invaluable.
Thank you again for your continued support.
Best wishes, a happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year to all.
The PTA Committee
Thank you to all those who purchased one of the fundraiser calendars – we have raised over £1,000 for the PTA from calendar sales. Every year the standard of entries seems to get better and better and we are so impressed by the enthusiasm from our students; click HERE for images from the calendar if you haven’t already viewed it.
Two of our students, both in Year 7, have been announced as the winners of this year’s Charity Christmas Card Competition, run by Elysian Residences in support of Air Ambulance Kent, Surrey, Sussex (KSS). Leo produced a minimalist watercolour of glass ornaments, and Ross a contemporary depiction of a glowing white tree against a starry night sky. Their designs have been made into Christmas cards; all the money raised from the sale of the cards goes directly to the Kent Surrey Sussex Air Ambulance.
Competition entrants were invited to let their creativity shine by designing a festive holiday card that reflected the theme 'What the Festive Holidays Mean to Me'. The standard of the entries was extremely high and Gavin Stein, Chief Executive Officer at Elysian Residences, commented: 'We are delighted to have received such a lovely response to our first Charity Christmas Card Competition and our partnership with Air Ambulance Kent Surrey Sussex (KSS). Selecting the winning entries was a challenge, but the judges were unanimous in selecting work by Leo and Ross.'
Leo and Ross each won £250 vouchers, as well as earning a fantastic £1,000 award for the school's art department. What a fabulous achievement!
Please use this order form if you would like to purchase cards of either of the designs. Make payment to Just Giving using the link on the order form, then email the form to Kerry Campbell at KSSAA: KerryCampbell@aakss.org.uk.

Following on from the success of last year, the Computer Science Department competed in the national Bebras Computing Challenge in November. The challenge is designed to test computational thinking and logical reasoning. All students who study Computer Science in Years 7 to 13 took part and many who competed looked forward to getting their results at the end of the month!
Students are able to log back into their profile on the Bebras website (please see a Computer Science teacher for details) to find out whether they obtained a certificate of participation, of merit (top 25% in the category, in school) or distinction (top 10% in the category, in school). They are able to print out their individual certificates from there.
In addition, we were astounded to find that we had 139 students who scored in the top 10% nationally across the different categories. This is a massive achievement for the students and for the school. A special mention to Eddie R, Tom T, Stanley T, Rowan N, Benjy S, Austin S, Oliver K, Fin M and Sam S who achieved a perfect score of 220 points. We look forward to seeing what TWGSB students will achieve next year.
Try out an example question below!
Mr Hamilton, Assistant Headteacher
The DT department has been as busy as ever this term. Year 7 students were tasked with creating an original chair design with storage, and designed and produced 3D printed chairs using CAD SketchUp software. Inspired by the Olympic cardboard beds company Airweave, the Year 7 'Cardboard furniture project' challenged students to create more sustainable furniture. Louis (pictured below) came top in the Year 7 Innovative Flat Pack Cardboard Chair project.
Taking inspiration from historical and cultural references, Year 10 students were asked to create a designer kettle for IKEA using CAD programs SOLIDWORKS and SketchUp, focusing on form and function. Pictured below are some 3D-printed prototypes created by Steven G, Calin B and Matthew S.
For their 'Innovative design' project Year 9 students were asked to solve the problem of single-use water bottles. The students had to research new, sustainable and smart materials, and focus on clients' want and needs. They then had to come up with a solution using CAD, and create a more appealing and multifunctional design using sustainable materials. Lastly, the students had to present their ideas to the class using the Dragons' Den format. Tom S's work (Swapple) is illustrated below.

The Tunbridge Wells campus performances of Lord of the Flies are fast approaching! Students have been hard at work rehearsing the play after school and during lunchtimes to create a wonderful performance. Tickets will be going on sale in January with performances taking place on Wednesday 5th and Thursday 6th February. We hope to see you there!
Miss Turner, Head of Drama and Theatre Studies
We were delighted to welcome Mr John Hajdu to speak to History and to Religion & Philosophy students in Years 11, 12 and 13 on Thursday 14th November. The trip was coordinated by the Holocaust Educational Trust in partnership with the school and provided Mr Hajdu the chance to speak for around 40 minutes about his experience in Hungary during World War II under the Nazis, and his subsequent experience in Hungary under the control of the Soviet Union after World War II. His story was emotive, thought provoking and powerful and the students were able to ask questions afterwards with a number staying behind to chat in more depth and ask more questions.
A huge thank you to Mr Hajdu and the Holocaust Educational Trust.
Mr Pratt, Head of History and Politics
On Wednesday 4th December Year 13 A Level History students were offered the unique opportunity to trial a new A Level study day at the Royal Airforce Museum London, focusing on the ‘War in the Air’ unit, which is part of the ‘British Experience of Warfare’ topic. The study day, which was devised by the Museum in collaboration with TWGSB, began with a private tour around the museum’s excellent World War I gallery led by the museum’s education coordinator (and World War I air warfare expert). After this informative and interesting tour, the students were allowed to do some hands-on work with items and sources relevant to the air war during World War I. These items included an original flying helmet and a flare gun, as well as original letters and documents concerning pilots and operations during World War I. The day finished with the students exploring the gallery, tasked with finding and analysing some key object associated with the air war. The day was thoroughly engaging and useful for the students, who came away from the day having gained a much deeper understanding of the topic.
Mr Stuart, History and Politics teacher
On Monday 2nd December, TWGSB A Level Politics students were treated to an enthralling day in Westminster, watching some of the most significant political figures in contemporary UK politics talk at length about their experiences in UK politics and their views on current events. A particular highlight included former politician and editor of the Spectator Michael Gove’s handling of tricky questions put to him by the audience on subjects such as Boris Johnson and the situation in Gaza.
Another highlight was the surprise appearance of the Speaker of the House Sir Lindsay Hoyle, whose lighthearted and rousing talk captured much of the audience. Another speaker who made an impression on the TWGSB politics students was Labour politician Stella Creasey, who offered a fascinating insight into the current outlook of the Labour party following its election in July. Many of the students came away from the conference with an enhanced passion for Politics, having seen it for the first time outside of the classroom. It was a day that will not be forgotten in a long time.
Mr Stuart, History and Politics teacher
The Year 7 MFL Film Club at the Sevenoaks campus enjoyed watching their first film in Spanish, Encanto. They now know what a Colombian accent sounds like and have learned about the importance of being there for the people you love and asking for help when things get too overwhelming. They had a fantastic time and are now moving on to a French film – the classic Ratatouille! We will be finding out about Remy's culinary activities, in French bien sûr.
Miss Fernández, MFL teacher
Towards the end of November, the Year 10 GCSE MFL students enjoyed accessible live theatre by Onatti Productions. We found that the plays complemented their foreign language learning. The dialogue was carefully constructed and woven into visually entertaining stories which engaged the students. Audience participation was a must!
Mrs Gray, MFL teacher
Our Year 12 and 13 French and Spanish A Level students recently visited Southborough Primary School and spent an afternoon presenting a carousel of activities to Year 6 pupils, giving them taster sessions in Spanish and French to help them when they visit France next year.
It was great to see the A Level students working in a group, interacting, inspiring and sharing their knowledge and love of languages. It was clear that the Year 6 pupils thoroughly enjoyed themselves, as did the A Level students.
Miss Allen, Head of MFL
We got the train up to Waterloo station from High Brooms and then there was a 10-minute walk to the BFI (British Film Institute).
On our way there, we had a few minutes to take a photo in front of a mural painted by the Peruvian artist Gisella Stapleton. The mural is about the new film Paddington in Peru, which represents the diversity and acceptance of people and was commissioned by the Peruvian Consulate in London.
Once we arrived at the BFI, we were shown to an auditorium where we sat and engaged in a lecture from two professors – one English and one Spanish. The lecture was extremely beneficial as it enhanced my understanding and knowledge of the play: Pan’s Labyrinth, or El Laberinto del Fauno in Spanish.
Listening to the lecturer in Spanish was also beneficial. The information was given in an interactive and clear way and this helped to develop our analysis of the film as we heard ideas from different people, too.
In the afternoon, we watched the film to see how the analysis could be applied and to help us get a clearer understanding of the play.
Sofia C-S (Year 13)
The first ever piano recital at the Sevenoaks campus was an immense success with many participants varying across the year groups. It took place during lunchtime [on Non-Uniform Day] and many students came to support their peers, and with a variety of music the talent of the students was shown. Everyone involved enjoyed it and many thanks to Mr Joris for organising this wonderful event.
Daniel A (Year 9)
On Wednesday 11th December, the Music Department hosted its second Christmas concert at the Sevenoaks site. Highly enthusiastic and talented students performed a variety of music to a packed house. The programme started with a touch of tradition – Once in Royal David’s City performed by the Year 7 Singers. They sang verse one walking in, with the audience joining in with verses two and three. The evening also featured some highly energetic renditions of Mr Brightside and Viva La Vida, as well as some quieter solos on piano and guitar offered by Fin, Kaya, William, Oscar, Elliot and Alexandru. Finally, the Year 7 Singers book-ended the show with a lively performance of Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas. We would like to thank all who made the event possible, including Sixth Formers, staff and parents.
On Thursday 19th December, the annual Christmas concert at Tunbridge Wells took place. The event was well received, with students, staff and parents enjoying the spirit of Christmas together. There were a number of bands performing popular hits such as Song 2 and Bohemian Rhapsody, contrasted by some more festive numbers such as Baby Please Come Home and Santa Claus is Coming to Town. A number of soloists played classical pieces by the likes of Beethoven, Einoudi, Chopin and Bartok, adding a level of sophistication to the event. There were also some musical theatre and jazz items, namely What Do I Need With Love and The Pink Panther. Finally, the popular mass choirs, Year 7 Singers and Year 8 Singers, delivered renditions of Feliz Navidad and All I Want for Christmas, much to the audience’s delight. We even had staff participation and a fantastic solo from Mr Hickmott from our site team. We would like to thank everyone who took part in or supported the show and wish everyone the best for a happy Christmas.
Mr Joris, Head of Music
Year 8 enjoyed a trip to Wembley stadium in November for a stadium tour. We had a very entertaining tour guide, who was very informative and knowledgeable and threw in some good jokes throughout! The students got to see the main changing room, walk down the tunnel to the pitch, sit pitch side in the dugouts and in the royal box. They all enjoyed the trip and were an absolute credit to the school.
Mr Boddy, PE Teacher

Very well done to all students involved in fixtures. Football practices have taken place after school for Years 7–9, four days per week at both campuses. These practices have been very well attended with just under 300 students attending every week. We look forward to another enjoyable term of football in Term 3 with the addition of some C and D team matches. Wishing all of you a relaxing break.
Mr Menzies, Head of Football and Head of Co-Curricular Sport
At the end of August Liam P in Year 8, walked around Bewl Water every day for nine days, in memory of his cousin Felix who died unexpectedly when he was only nine years old. Liam took on the challenge to raise money for a memorial bench for the graveyard. He ended up raising nearly £1,500, which was enough for two benches. While the family wait for approval from the church for the first bench, the second bench has already been installed at Bewl Water.
Six of Liam's friends in 8G (Atticus, Edward, Finn, Hugo, Magnus and Patric) joined him on one of his walks, as did friends and family on some of the other walks. Liam showed such resilience in completing the challenge and his family are rightly very proud of him, as is the TWGSB community.
Oli, Owen and I are part of 17th Tonbridge Scout and Guide Band. The day starts at around 10:15 when we gather at the castle and get our ranks and dressing sorted as well as being tuned and practising some of the harder songs. Then once all the groups of the procession are in order we step off and start playing. We parade from Tonbridge Castle down to the war memorial and the band marches at the front, leading it. While the distance we cover is not long, we can still play around four songs as we march at quite a slow pace. Once we reach the memorial, we enter, the uniformed organisations get in position, and we wait for the service to start. Oli, Owen and I have to march on to the main area, with our bugles ready to play the Last Post.
It was such an honour to be able to play the Last Post for Tonbridge this year, as I was up on the platform with the priest and veterans. Plus, having such a large crowd to play in front of really raised the stakes of how important it was to play professionally. I think we as a group managed to deliver a great performance of the Last Post and Reveille!

Abhyuday S in Year 10 has been awarded the prestigious title of Candidate Master by FIDE, the international chess federation. This title is a significant honour in the world of chess, reflecting not only Abhyuday’s exceptional chess talent but also his dedication, perseverance and consistent performance in highly competitive tournaments. The Candidate Master title is one of FIDE's esteemed distinctions, recognising players who have demonstrated strategic mastery and excellence on a global platform.
From 21st to 29th December, my husband, Bhupinder Sandhu a mindfulness coach, and I will be embarking on a journey to raise awareness about mental health. We will be walking from London to Cardiff, a distance of approximately 160 miles, to raise funds for Mind, a leading mental health charity in the UK. We would be incredibly grateful for your support, whether its a donation, a kind word, or simply sharing our journey with your friends and family. Your encouragement will fuel our determination to make a difference; your generous donation will help Mind provide vital services and support to those struggling with mental health problems.
Last December, we successfully completed a 445-mile walk from London to Edinburgh. This experience ignited our passion for raising awareness about mental health. If you would like to donate, the link is here: https://www.justgiving.com/page/londontocardiffwalk.
You can read more about our journey in this BBC article.

The TWGSB site team would like to thank all those who supported them in their moustache-growing efforts for Movember. The team were thrilled to raise just over £1,000 for the cause but relieved at the end of the month when they were able to remove the extra facial hair! Well done team!
Independent Catering served a delicious traditional Christmas lunch at both campuses on Wednesday 11th December – 607 lunches at Tunbridge Wells, and 267 at Sevenoaks! Instead of Christmas pudding for dessert there was a tempting array of sweet alternatives on offer.
The fundraising team at the Hospice in the Weald need to raise over £8 million every year to provide outstanding Hospice care to the local community. Their Christmas Tree Recycling Campaign is back for its fifth year, and their goal is to collect 2,000 trees and raise £62,000!
Along with a host of volunteers, they collect Christmas trees from those who kindly make a suggested donation of £20 per tree (10% of all donations will be given to a local, community-based charity chosen by Hospice). All trees are taken away and recycled, helping both the community and the environment!
